After World War II Latin America began to experience a decrease in production of industrial goods. The war was over so the demand for supplies decreased drastically. It was around this time when Latin America also began to experience a rise in population. Many countries flourished with people rapidly, forming some of the highest populated cities we know and hear about today. Big cities such as; Rio de Janiero, Sao Paolo, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Havana and Santiago all grew so fast and surpassed the 1 million inhabitant mark quickly. These large cities become landmarks because of the services and goods they supply for the rest of the world as well for their country. Without some of these big cities, some countries wouldn’t be the same and wouldn’t have as much success as they do now.
Mexico City is a perfect
example of an important big city. Other than being the oldest city in all of Latin
America, it is also one of the largest when it comes to population. In fact
Mexico City has been recorded to be the second largest city in the whole world
with a population of approximately 20 million people. This immense city only
falls second to Japan’s Tokyo city with a population of approximately 30
million people. Aside from being so big, this city plays a huge role in the
success of Mexico’s economy. According to an article called, 20 Facts about Mexico City, the city was
recorded to be the 8th richest city in the world with a GDP of $411
Billion. That is insane considering the fact that we are only talking about one
city and not a whole country. The country depends heavily on the city because it
aids its economy immensely. Mexico would not be the same without this city. The
population growth in this region, as well as many other factors, have made
Mexico City a huge power house and a landmark for the world.
Another huge city in Latin America that has flourished and
become so successful is Rio De Janiero. Rio de Janiero is a city known for its
bays. This city is very important to the global trade market because if the
harbors that are located along the coast of this region. This place is key
because of the production of goods it supplies for the country and the rest of
the world. According to Amanda Briney, who wrote an article called Rio de Janiero, “The city's main
industries include chemicals, petroleum, processed foods, pharmaceuticals,
textiles, clothing and furniture.” The boom of the industrial economy is
probably what caused this region to grow significantly.
These two cities are only a couple of many that have grown and
been successful over time. Many factors have contributed to the growth of these
cities but the fact of the matter is that these cities have become not only
important to their respective countries, however to the rest of the world.
